How to get started and FAQ (Frequently asked Questions) How to register and use this site.
|
In order to access the members section of this forum, you will need to register. This is free and painless. The registration requires you to enter a VALID e-mail address. If you have overzealous SPAM filtering software, your activation e-mail may end up in your spam folder. In order to stop this, please add hoveladmin@thehovel.com to your list of allowed e-mail addresses.
If you do not receive a activation e-mail within 24 hours, then after checking your spam folder send an e-mail on the previous address and a member of the admin team will look into it for you.
We apologise that due to spammers we are having to use a manual verification process. This does mean you can't get immediate access, but we usually process all registrations within 24 hours.
Commonly Asked Questions:
Q: Why are some parts of your site members only?
A: All the welfare parts of the site are free for anyone to browse and read the posts. However, the more community focussed sections require registration simply so you can join in debates and take part.
Q: Why do you ask for an e-mail address?
A: This is part of verifying that the registration has not come from an automated robot. Also, your e-mail address is used to send out Administration notices and newsletters (depending on your settings in your profile) as well as Private messages and replies to topics you are interested in.
Q: Do you sell the e-mail address information or give it to spammers?
A: No. We do not share the e-mail address you supply with anyone. Unless you specifically set it in your profile, only the administrators have access to your e-mail. We also do not send out spam, although from time to time we do send newsletters or send out information notices.
Q: I registered, but I can't remember my username/password. How can I have it fixed.
A: Send the administration team an e-mail at Hoveladmin@thehovel.com from the e-mail address you registered from and you will be sent a copy of your username and/or your password will be reset for you.
Q: Why do you ask for donations when you say this service is free?
A: Well, the service is free for you to use. However, to provide this service, it costs us for the use and maintenance of the server the forum runs on. Any donations you make to the fund for the upkeep of the server go towards this. None of the Admin team are paid, all time is donated by them to keep this service running. Remember, donations are completely voluntary, However donating even a small amount helps to keep the service running, and enables us to continue to help with cat welfare, as well as to provide a place for like minded people to come together as a community.
Q: Why is a cat site called The Hovel?
A: It's a historical oddity, it is called the Hovel as I had the domain name and I used to use it for testing and messing around with ideas. When the forum was started it was never intended to be anything but a short test, now almost 3 years later, it is still growing.
Q: The site is a a bit confusing. Why is it so complicated?
A: Again, the simple answer is that had we got to do this again, we would not have done it the way we have. But, it is how things have developed over time. There is a project to get things changed, however, that is going to take time and money, so although it is on the list of things to do, until we have sufficient funds to make the changes, we are stuck with the system, we grew to this state with.
Q: I like the site, what can I do to help?
A: Well, there are always lots of jobs that need doing, from helping with moderating to running competitions. If you would like to donate some of your time, let me know by sending me a PM.
Q: You don't have my question in this list?
A: Well, send me a PM and I am sure I will have a suitable answer for you.
